Spain in 10 Days

the backstory

Spain did not disappoint. We experienced the uniqueness of its distinct regions, pinxtos, paseos, whitewashed villages, paella, flamenco, sunny beaches, Gaudi architecture, blended and distinct cultures, amazing food, and amazing people.

Spain is a big country with unique regions – in this itinerary we explore them all. We started in Barcelona along the east coast, flew South to Andalucia to visit the sleepy whitewashed hill town of Ronda and then to Sevilla. We capped off the trip with a visit to San Sebastian and the Basque Country which was our favorite  – home to sparkling beaches and tasy pintxos.  If you have more time, tack on a couple of days (+1 in Barcelona, +1 in San Sebastian). We did visit Madrid on our trip removed it from this itinerary because it felt like too much moving around in a short amount of time. Also, our preferred cities are smaller, coastal cities so we tend to lean towards adding more time in those types of places during our trips.

This is an overview of our itinerary with a deep dive of each day included below. It is organized by the city where we slept for each particular day.

OUR FAVORITE ACTIVITIES

Some of the most fun we had on this trip were impromtu activities we didn’t book or plan in our itinerary – things like joining in on the evening paseo (slow, evening walk where Spanish families were out and about to meet, walk, and talk in the streets each evening). We also happened to be in Seville at the same time as their Spring Festival was going on and a soccer match. The Spring Festival was pretty amazing to experience if you can time your trip to coincide with that. It is worth checking to see what might be going on based on the timing of your trip.

TIPS

BARCELONA

It is such a unique, vibrant city fully of artsy, playful Moderniste architecture, a beautiful beach promenade, quaint narrow alleys, and amazing food – worth visiting!

SETTLE IN

We love all the beach vibes. After the long overnight flight and big-time change, we like to ease into the first day of my trips, so you’ll notice this itinerary (just like most of our itineraries) start near the water or at the beach.

ACTIVITIES

Sagrada Familia: You’ll want to buy tickets ahead of time to ensure you get to visit Gaudi’s (Catalan architect) famous, colorful, grand, and unfinished church. Closed on Monday’s.

La Pedrera and Block of Discord Houses: We didn’t end up touring these, just popping by for a view from the outside. The Block of Discord Houses are just three totally unique Modernista houses and La Pedrera is a famous Gaudi-designed house. If you want to go inside, you can buy tickets to La Pedrera, Casa Batllo, and Casa Museu Amatller.

EATING

Usually dinner is after 9PM in Spain, but an early tapas dinner might be nice on the first night to help adjust after a lot of travel and the new time zone

DAY 2: around barcelona & food tour

AROUND BARCELONA & FOOD TOUR

10:00AM-11:30PM | Take a walk through Barri Gotic (historic center of the old city of Barcelona)

It is fun to see some of the Spanish artist’s early work here. You should buy timed-entry tickets ahead of time to avoid the lines.

FOOD TOUR

We loved this tour – It was just us and one other couple with a local taking us around to several fun, local spots and teaching us some history along the way.

PARK GUELL

This is a fun, colorful, and uniquely Gaudi-designed park overlooking the city.

BARRI GOTIC

Check out Placa Reial (main square), Placa Del Pi (square with cute shops), and Barcelona Cathedral for some gothic architecture. You could listen to a guided walk on your own by downloading a free audio tour (this is what we did) or take a guided tour.

Day 3: arrive in ronda & EXPLORE

Sleep in Ronda

PLANNED ACTIVITES

10:00AM | Check out of Barcelona hotel/air bnb

10:30AM | Head to Ronda (we flew from BCN to AGP and picked up a rental car there)

7:00PM | Ronda Guitar House for a 45-minute concert

TIPS

RONDA

Ronda is a cute little remote town and one of the biggest Andalucia white hill towns. It is small and rural with a dramatic cliffside setting spanning a huge gorge, has a cute little town, and is home to the oldest bullring in Spain.

GETTING THERE

We opted to fly from Barcelona to Malaga airport and then to drive the rest of the way. If you do drive, check with your hotel/air bnb on parking ahead of time. We set up the car rental to pick up in Malaga and to drop off in Seville.

RONDA GUITAR HOUSE

There is a daily concert at 7PM for 45 minutes from a  local guitar artist and you can buy tickets ahead of time online. We didn’t get to try this out, but it is on our list.

Day 4: AROUND RONDA

Sleep in Ronda

PLANNED ACTIVITIES

CHECK OUT BULLRING, ALMEDA PARK & CARERRA ESPINEL

9:00AM | Grab a coffee and pastry at Confieria Daver

8:30PM | Tapas at Taberna El Almacen

TIPS

THE GORGE & BRIDGE

New town sits on one side and old town on the other of the gorge, Old Tajo. Check out the cool view of the bridge from the new town side. You can go inside the bridge itself but the views outside are the big hit.

BULLRING

Ronda is the birthplace of modern bullfighting. Although I am not a fan and will never enjoy a bull fight, it is worth checking out the old bullring and learning about the traditional Andalusian horse culture and heritage. You can buy a ticket right at the back of the bullring.

8:00PM | Dinner at El Traga

10:00PM | Have some homemade ice cream at Bolas

TIPS

SEVILLA

Sevilla hums with festivities and rhythm. We learned that Sevilla is less about the sites and more about the experiences you will find – flamenco festivals, spirited soccer games, paella in the streets, lively paseos, and more. Before you go, check to see what festivals or activities might be going on based on the timing of your trip – we got lucky and made it to a soccer match and to experience a Flamenco Festival.

ITINERARY

Let this itinerary be a loose plan (as all should be) and change it up if something else sparks your interest in the moment. Our itinerary was planned and ended up being entirely based on what was going on in Sevilla while we were there.

FLAMENCO

Flamenco is very much a part of the culture, so worth experiencing it in some way while you are visiting. You can buy tickets to see an hour long show here.

Sleep in San Sebastian

PLANNED ACTIVITES

ARRIVE & PINTXOS

8:00AM | Take the train from Seville to San Sebastian

2:30PM | Arrive in San Sebastian

7:00PM | Have a drink in the old town’s main square – Plaza de la Constitucion

8:00PM | Go pintxo bar hopping through Old Town (Bar Borda-Berri, Bar Txepetxa; Bar Zeruko, La Cuchara de San Telmo)

10:00PM | Stop in La Viña for the most delicious cheesecake

TIPS

TRAIN

This is a long ride (~7.5 hours) but worth it for a visit to San Sebastian. We actually spent a day in Madrid between Seville and San Sebastian, but we didn’t have a chance to see much that way, and Madrid was not our favorite of the cities, so we left that out of this itinerary.

SAN SEBASTIAN

This is one of our favorite places of all time – beautiful beaches surrounded by mountains, a pretty beachfront promenade, cute old town, and little to do except soak it all in and enjoy some of the best food in Spain.

PINTXOS

These are fun little snack-like tapas – we’ve listed some places to try above, but pick the ones that look good to you and pop in and out for little bites as you wader through Old Town.

Day 9 & 10: SAN SEBASTIAN WRAP UP & HOME

Sleep in Barcelona

PLANNED ACTIVITES

SAN SEBASTIAN & HEADING HOME

8:30AM | Pack up, check out, ask about storing bags

9:00AM | Breakfast at Bar Gorriti for a local, traditional stand-up style breakfast

10:00AM | Hike up Monte Igueldo or take the funicular up for awesome views; check out Peine del Viento (the group of three famous statues near the base of the funicular) or check out the aquarium

12:30PM | Lunch

2:00PM | Train back to Barcelona (5.5. hours); fly out the following day

TIPS

MONTE IGUELDO

This is where you can see all the views overlooking San Sebastian. You can get to the entrance of the funicular on the far western end of Playa de Ondarreta.

TIMING

Consider adding an additional day/night in San Sebastian. Though there are not major sights, it is a fun, relaxing beach town to spend time relaxing and enjoying a beautiful place and some delicious food.

LOGISTICS

Look for an afternoon train out of San Sebastian to Barcelona so you can get a little more time in San Sebastian. Make sure to book these tickets ahead of time. Plan to stay the night in Barcelona so you can fly out from there the next morning.
